Caius Proculeius was among Augustus's most trusted inner circle — Horace called him a man of generous spirit, and he was reportedly considered as a possible successor before Agrippa and Livia's son Tiberius eclipsed all others. He served as a negotiator sent to Cleopatra in 30 BC immediately after Actium, attempting to take her alive before she could poison herself. This bronze was struck on Cephallenia under his magistracy during precisely those years, placing it squarely within the administrative reorganization of Greece following Octavian's consolidation of power.
