Nysa, a prosperous city in the Maeander valley, was among the first Greek cities in Asia Minor to enthusiastically adopt the imperial cult. This issue honors Gaius Caesar, Augustus's grandson and designated heir, whose adoption and grooming for succession dominated Roman politics in the final decade of the first century BC. Gaius died in 4 AD from wounds sustained during a minor Armenian campaign — cutting short a succession plan that Augustus had spent years constructing.
