Nicomedia had long cultivated its status as the leading city of Bithynia, and local bronze issues under Antoninus Pius reflect that civic ambition — the city minted prolifically throughout his reign, producing a dense series of small bronzes tied to local cult, festival, and title competitions with neighboring Nicaea.
