Reverse description A Dionysiac herm stands frontally at center, mounted upon the prow of a ship (apluster or prow), the figure wearing a kalathos (basket-shaped headdress) atop its head and rendered in the characteristic pillar-like form of a herm. The ethnic legend ΜΥΤΙΛΗΝΑΙΩΝ is disposed around the field, identifying the civic authority of Mytilene on Lesbos. The combination of the Dionysiac herm with a ship's prow alludes to the maritime identity and Dionysiac religious traditions of the city.
