Reverse description Nemesis, the goddess of retribution, depicted standing and facing left, plucking her chiton at the neckline with her right hand in the characteristic gesture of warding off hubris, while holding a cubit rule (measuring rod) in her left hand. A wheel, her symbolic attribute of fate and inevitable justice, is placed at her feet to the lower left. The reverse legend naming the city of Tium encircles the design field.

Additional information

Tium was a minor coastal polis on the Black Sea shore of Bithynia, historically overshadowed by Heraclea Pontica to its west and never a major civic minting center. The city issued bronze coinage sporadically under the Antonines, and the types invoking Nemesis reflect a pattern common to smaller provincial cities seeking to assert civic identity through divine patronage rather than imperial imagery alone. Nemesis held particular resonance in Bithynia, where her cult was tied to market justice and the regulation of weights — fitting for a port town dependent on honest trade.
