Nicaea was among the most prolific issuers of provincial bronze under the Severan dynasty, its mint producing a vast range of types across the reigns of Septimius Severus and his family. The city's status as a major administrative and commercial hub in Bithynia drove consistent local demand for small bronze, and the sheer volume of surviving types attests to a mint operating with considerable organizational capacity throughout this period.
The ΝΙΚΑΙΕΩΝ ethnic in the exergue or legend reflects civic pride during an era when Nicaea and its rival Nicomedia competed aggressively for imperial honorifics.
