The serpent type is a well-attested civic symbol on Nicaean bronze coinage, associated with the cult of Asclepius or local religious tradition. The ethnic legend ΝΙΚΑΙΕΩΝ is inscribed around the reverse field, identifying the issuing city. The overall die work is characteristic of the provincial hammered bronzes struck at Nicaea during the Severan period. |
