Nicaea's civic bronze issues under Septimius Severus belong to a period when the city was competing aggressively with Nicomedia for primacy in Bithynia — a rivalry played out partly through the volume and quality of local coinage. Nicaea had backed Severus early in the civil wars of 193, and the subsequent run of civic bronzes likely reflects that political dividend.
