Petra's civic bronze coinage under Septimius Severus reflects the city's status as a Roman provincial capital long past its Nabataean peak — by the time these were struck, the caravan trade that had made Petra fabulously wealthy had largely shifted north to Palmyra. The Greek tribunician legend places this squarely within the eastern provincial minting tradition, where Latin imperial titulature was routinely rendered in Greek for local circulation.
