Alexandria Troas — refounded as a Roman colony under Julius Caesar and later reinforced by Augustus — held a privileged colonial status that entitled it to produce its own bronze coinage with Latin legends, unusual among Greek civic mints. The reign of Septimius Severus saw renewed administrative attention to the Asian conventus cities, partly as consolidation after his defeat of Pescennius Niger in 194 AD, whose support base had been concentrated precisely in the eastern provinces.
