Magnesia ad Maeandrum had a long habit of invoking its mythological founding — the city claimed descent from Magnetes, companions of Thessalian heroes — but coinage under Philip I reflects something more immediate: the administrative reorganization of the Asian conventus system under which the city operated through the Milesian circuit. Philip's short reign saw a surge in provincial bronze issues across Asia Minor, likely tied to his suspension of Gordian III's Sasanian war payments and the relative fiscal breathing room that followed the Peace of Misiche in 244.
