Smyrna was among the most aggressively competitive cities in the province of Asia when it came to securing imperial honorifics, having famously lobbied — and won — the title of *neokoros* multiple times. Local bronze issues under Gordian III formed part of that civic self-promotion, circulating within a city that had been rebuilt largely by Marcus Aurelius after a catastrophic earthquake in 178 AD and never missed an opportunity to advertise its loyalty to Rome.
