Ephesus was the administrative seat of the Conventus Ephesius and among the most prolific civic minting authorities in Roman Asia Minor. Under Elagabalus, the city continued issuing bronze at multiple denomination sizes, and this small module likely served everyday transactional needs at the lowest end of the local exchange economy. The reign itself was brief and chaotic — Elagabalus was assassinated by the Praetorian Guard in March 222, aged around 18, and the Senate's subsequent damnatio memoriae makes his provincial bronzes somewhat irregular survivors.
