| Beschrijving keerzijde | Nude figure of Alexander the Great standing facing, with head turned to the right, holding a short sword (or possibly a sword hilt) in one hand and a long spear in the other. The heroic nudity reflects the Hellenistic tradition of depicting Alexander as a divine or semi-divine figure, appropriate to the civic pride of Nicaea, a city that honoured his memory. The reverse legend encircles the standing figure, filling the field around him. The design is executed in the compact provincial style characteristic of Bithynian civic bronzes. |
