| Obverse description | Draped bust of Messalina facing right, rendered in the provincial Greek style typical of Aeolian civic coinage under Claudius. The portrait displays characteristic features of the empress with hair dressed in the fashion of the Julio-Claudian period. The circular legend ΜΕϹΑΛΕΙΝΑ ϹΕΒΑϹΤΗ surrounds the effigy, identifying the subject as Augusta. The flan is irregular, as is common for bronze issues of this region and period. |
