Pessinus, the ancient Phrygian cult center sacred to Cybele, was incorporated into the Roman provincial system under Claudius when Galatia's client kingdom arrangements were reorganized following the death of Amyntas's dynastic line. Civic bronze issues like this one mark the town's assertion of municipal identity under the new arrangement — Pessinus had the theological prestige but limited political standing, and local coinage was one of the few instruments through which that identity could be expressed.
The city's name in the genitive plural on the reverse is the primary attributing detail for the series.
