Reverse description A war galley or merchant vessel (ploion) depicted sailing to the right, shown in profile with a prominent hull, oars indicated along the waterline, and a curved stern. The civic legend of the Smyrnaeans is divided around the type, reading ϹΜΥΡΝ above and ΝΑΙΩ below, noting the misspelling (sic) in place of the expected ϹΜΥΡΝΑΙΩΝ. The galley type reflects Smyrna's proud maritime identity as a major Aegean port city.
