Obverse description Draped bust of the emperor Caligula (Gaius Caesar) facing right, rendered in the provincial Greek style typical of Smyrnaean civic coinage of the early Imperial period. The portrait displays a bare head with youthful features characteristic of Caligula's portraiture. A circular Greek legend surrounds the bust, naming the emperor and the Roman magistrate Aviolus in the dative construction, as was conventional for provincial honorific coinage. The flan is irregular and the surfaces show typical patination of bronze provincial issues.
