The Thessalian Koinon — a federal league of cities revived under Roman reorganization of Greece — issued coins in Augustus's name as a demonstration of regional loyalty during the consolidation of the principate. The magistrate name partially preserved in the legend, ΜΕΓΑΛΟΚΛΕ(ΟΥΣ), identifies the sitting official responsible for the issue, a naming convention the Koinon maintained through several Augustan-era emissions.
