| Reverse description | A galley prow oriented to the left occupies the central field, its oar-banks rendered in relief with characteristic horizontal stripes representing the hull timbers. Above the prow, a curved aplustre or acrostolion is visible. The type is a direct allusion to the naval history of Nicopolis, the city founded by Augustus to commemorate his victory at the Battle of Actium in 31 BC. The civic ethnic legend ΝΙΚΟΠΟΛΕωϹ arcs across the upper field above the prow. |
