| Beschrijving keerzijde | A coiled serpent with its head erect, facing right, occupying the central field of the reverse. The serpent is depicted with its body arranged in a series of tight coils, a motif closely associated with the healing cult and civic religious symbolism prevalent in Bithynian cities. The ethnic legend ΝΙΚΑΙΕΩΝ is inscribed around the field, identifying the issuing city of Nicaea. The design is rendered in a bold, if somewhat crude, provincial style characteristic of small-denomination civic bronzes of the Severan era. |
