Nicaea's civic bronze issues under Septimius Severus reflect the city's careful political positioning during the civil wars of 193 AD — the so-called Year of the Five Emperors. Bithynian cities that declared early for Severus against Pescennius Niger, who held strong support across much of Asia Minor, were rewarded with continued minting privileges. Nicaea was among them.
The ethnic legend ΝΙΚΑΙΕΩΝ, standard on civic issues from this mint, places this squarely within the city's autonomous bronze coinage rather than any imperial issue.
