| Reverse description | Eros portrayed in the funerary guise of Thanatos, standing left in a contemplative attitude, his wings furled behind him. He leans with one arm resting upon an inverted torch, the symbol of extinguished life, which is set upon a cippus or low funerary altar. The composition reflects the Hellenistic conflation of Eros and Thanatos common in the iconography of provincial Asia Minor coinage. The ethnic legend ΝΙΚΑΙΕΩΝ appears in the field, denoting the civic authority of Nicaea. |
