| Reverse description | The infant Dionysus is depicted seated facing on a cista mystica, the sacred wicker basket associated with the Dionysiac mysteries, a cult of particular importance at Magnesia ad Maeandrum. The divine child is shown frontally with arms slightly extended, conveying a hieratic quality characteristic of provincial Asiatic bronzes of the Severan and post-Severan periods. The ethnic legend ΜΑΓΝΗΤΩΝ appears in the field around the type, identifying the issuing city. The overall fabric is typical of small-module civic bronzes struck under the Roman provincial system in the Conventus of Miletus. |
