Nicopolis ad Istrum and Nicopolis in Epirus are the cities most frequently encountered in provincial bronze coinage, but this piece comes from the Achaean Nicopolis — founded by Augustus on the site of his camp before the Battle of Actium in 31 BC, a city whose very existence was a monument to his victory over Antony and Cleopatra. Provincial issues from this mint under Marcus Aurelius are sparsely attested, making die linkage studies across surviving examples genuinely difficult.
