Cos struck coins under Roman imperial authority as part of the Conventus of Halicarnassus, one of the judicial districts Rome organized across Asia Minor. The island had long traded on its association with Asclepius and its famous medical school, a reputation Roman administrators were content to leave undisturbed so long as local elites managed civic affairs quietly. Domitian's reign saw a marked tightening of provincial administration, but small civic bronzes like this continued circulating through local markets largely outside imperial concern.
