Nicaea's civic bronze issues under Commodus belong to a period when Bithynian cities were actively competing for imperial honorifics — Nicaea and Nicomedia fought bitterly over the title of "first city" of the province, a rivalry prosecuted through embassies, legal challenges, and conspicuous loyalty demonstrated partly through coinage bearing the emperor's name.
