Smyrna was among the most politically ambitious cities in the Roman province of Asia, having competed fiercely with Ephesus and Pergamon for the title of "First City of Asia." The right to strike civic bronze was itself a mark of that status, and issues under Commodus fall within the period when Smyrna held a neokoros designation — an honorific temple wardenship that required imperial favor to obtain and keep.
