This small civic bronze falls in the year of the four emperors, when Galba, Otho, Vitellius, and Vespasian each held or contested power in rapid succession. Antioch, as the administrative capital of Roman Syria and headquarters of the legions that would ultimately back Vespasian's successful bid, occupied a politically charged position during precisely this window. Civic bronzes of this type continued to be struck under the city's own authority, a practice Rome periodically tolerated in eastern mints where local small-change demand outpaced imperial supply.
