| Obverse description | Youthful bare head of Marcus Aurelius as Caesar, facing right, with lightly bearded chin and curly hair rendered in fine strands. The portrait is executed in the provincial Greek style typical of Ionian civic bronzes of the Antonine period. The Greek legend ΑΥΡΗΛΙοϹ ΚΑΙϹΑΡ runs around the periphery, with alpha letters exhibiting a characteristic curved crossbar. The flan is irregular and the strike somewhat off-center, consistent with provincial hammered coinage of this period. |
