The animal is rendered in profile with a compact, solid body typical of provincial Carian bronzes. The Greek magistrate legend ΔΙΑ (ΠΟ ΑΙ) ΑΔΡΑϹΤΟΥ is distributed around the field, recording the name of the local magistrate Adrastos who oversaw the issue. The type is characteristic of civic bronzes from Trapezopolis during the reign of Antoninus Pius. |

Trapezopolis was a minor Lydian city whose civic coinage depended almost entirely on the patronage of local magistrates — the name ΑΔΡΑϹΤΟΥ in the legend identifies the issuing magistrate Adrastos, whose tenure appears confined to the earliest years of Antoninus Pius's reign. The ΔΙΑ abbreviation indicates he held the office of grammateus, the civic secretary responsible for authorizing bronze issues of exactly this modest module. Very few magistrate-linked types from Trapezopolis are attested in more than a handful of specimens.
