| Reverse description | Cista mystica with closed lid surmounted by a Silenic or Bacchic theatrical mask, flanked on either side by a thyrsus standing upright in the field. The cista, an emblem closely associated with the Dionysiac mysteries and the city of Teos, is rendered in frontal view. The ethnic legend ΤΗΙΩΝ is inscribed in the field, identifying the issuing civic authority. The composition is characteristic of the Bacchic iconographic tradition prevalent on Tean coinage under the Antonine dynasty. |
