Scepsis was a minor Troad settlement with an outsized claim to literary history — it was here that Aristotle's library reportedly ended up after his death, buried in a pit by heirs afraid of Attalid book-collectors, and only recovered centuries later in damaged condition. By Trajan's reign the city was a quiet backwater within the Adramyteum conventus, issuing small bronzes more out of civic habit than economic necessity. The rarity of surviving civic bronzes from Scepsis reflects its limited output rather than heavy circulation loss.
