Nicaea was one of the most prolific provincial minting cities under Septimius Severus, a loyalty that paid off — the city had backed him early during the civil wars of 193 AD against rivals Pescennius Niger and Clodius Albinus, and the subsequent flood of civic bronze issues reflects that political alignment finding concrete expression in the mint.
