Reverse description A cista mystica depicted centrally, from which a serpent emerges and coils upward — a standard Dionysiac cult symbol widely employed on the civic bronze coinage of Nicaea in Bithynia. The cista, a wicker basket associated with mystery cult rituals, is rendered in low relief on the small flan. The overall design is characteristic of Bithynian provincial issues of the Severan era, though surface corrosion and wear obscure finer details of the composition.
