Alexandria's municipal bronze issues under Augustus occupy an awkward position in Roman numismatic history — technically provincial, yet struck under direct imperial oversight in a city the Senate was formally barred from visiting without permission. Egypt was administered as Augustus's personal estate rather than a senatorial province, a constitutional arrangement without precedent in Roman governance. The Greek title ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΣ, a direct translation of "Augustus," appears on Alexandrian coinage from the earliest years of the principate, making these small bronzes among the first coins anywhere to carry that title in Greek.
