Berytus — modern Beirut — received its colonial status as Colonia Iulia Augusta Felix Berytus around 15 BC, settled with veterans of the Fifth Macedonian and Third Gallican legions after Augustus discharged them following campaigns in the east. The city became one of the most Romanized outposts in the Levant, and its civic bronze coinage reflects that self-conscious identity. This issue belongs to that colonial project rather than to any imperial mint.
Rouvier's catalogue of Phoenician coinage remains the foundational reference for Berytus bronzes, though his numbering predates modern die studies.
