Alexandria Troas, a Roman colony refounded by Augustus himself — likely under the name Colonia Augusta Troas — was one of the few cities in the eastern Aegean granted full colonial status, exempting its citizens from provincial taxation. Augustus considered the site seriously as a potential capital before settling on Byzantium, and later Rome, as priorities shifted. That political intimacy explains the early and enthusiastic local coinage in his name.
