Patras functioned as a minor Achaean League member city for much of this period, its coinage subordinate to league monetary policy after the confederation consolidated in the third century BC. The city gained far greater prominence only under Augustus, who refounded it as the Roman colony Colonia Aroe Augusta Patrensis around 14 BC, effectively ending its independent civic mint tradition and absorbing its population with veteran settlers from the Praetorian and other disbanded forces.
