Obverse description Bare or laureate head of Emperor Trajan facing right, rendered in low relief on an irregularly shaped flan with heavy patination and surface corrosion obscuring fine detail. The portrait follows the standard Alexandrian convention for imperial coinage of the Trajanic period, with the head depicted in profile. The coin's small module and worn state render the precise treatment of the laurel wreath uncertain, hence the tentative attribution. No legible surrounding legend is discernible on this example.

Additional information

Year 15 of Trajan's reign saw Alexandria's mint producing substantial civic bronze output, but the smallest denominations — the 12mm Æ among them — survive in genuinely poor numbers relative to larger issues. Egypt's dry climate preserves much ancient bronze well, yet these tiny pieces were worked hard in daily transactions and discarded without ceremony. The L ΙΕ regnal date formula, standard to Alexandrian civic bronze, allows precise dating otherwise impossible for most provincial issues of this period.
