Year 9 of Hadrian's reign — the regnal year encoded in the obverse legend — places this piece in the period immediately following his first great tour of the eastern provinces, during which Alexandria received him with exceptional ceremony. The city's mint produced an enormous variety of small bronzes under Hadrian, and the Æ11 denomination served the lowest end of daily commerce in a city where even fractional coinage saw genuine use in the markets along the Canopic Way.
