Caesarea Maritima served as the administrative capital of Roman Syria Palaestina, and its civic bronze coinage under Severus Alexander reflects the city's unusually close relationship with the imperial center — Caesarea had held colonial status since Vespasian, giving its mint a degree of prestige uncommon among Levantine provincial issues. The reign of Severus Alexander itself ended abruptly in 235 when his own troops mutinied on the Rhine, elevating Maximinus Thrax and closing this provincial series without ceremony.
