Osroene occupied a perpetually uncomfortable position between Rome and Parthia, and Abgar VIII — known in Syriac sources as "the Great" — navigated that tension with remarkable dexterity. His decision to align with Septimius Severus during the latter's eastern campaigns of the 190s was rewarded with what amounted to Roman recognition of his quasi-autonomous status. This joint coinage is the physical artifact of that political accommodation: a client king's face beside an emperor's, struck in the ancient Mesopotamian city of Edessa.
Abgar's court at Edessa is also the earliest documented royal environment with a Christian presence, noted by Eusebius — though the legendary correspondence between Abgar and Christ is almost certainly apocryphal.
