The portrait is executed in the late Hellenistic tradition characteristic of Syracusan bronze coinage under Roman rule, with softened facial features and a slightly downcast gaze. | Beschrijving keerzijde | Upright thunderbolt displayed vertically at center, its shaft rendered with spiral windings and flanking barbs or volutes at each end, dividing the Greek ethnic legend ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ into two columns on either side. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border. The thunderbolt, an attribute of Zeus, is a common reverse type for bronze coinage of Syracuse during the Roman period and is rendered with careful detail despite the small module. |
