Ptolemy of Mauretania was the last ruler of his dynasty — a grandson of Antony and Cleopatra — and his reign ended when Caligula had him summoned to Rome and executed, reportedly out of jealousy over the reception Ptolemy received at the theatre. The murder in 40 AD directly triggered the revolt of Aedemon and set off years of Roman military operations to pacify what became the provinces of Mauretania Tingitana and Mauretania Caesariensis.
This heavy bronze was struck in the final months before that rupture.
