Aelia Verina was wife to Leo I and one of the most politically active empresses of the fifth century — she later conspired in the assassination of Leo's powerful general Aspar in 471, and after Leo's death attempted to place her own brother Basiliscus on the throne. Coins struck in her name are rare partly because empress coinages of this period were issued selectively and in limited volume, not as a matter of routine imperial policy.
