Obverse description Bust of Emperor Leo I facing right, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed, rendered in the late Roman imperial style characteristic of fifth-century Eastern nummi. The effigy is set within a compact flan with the abbreviated Latin legend D N LEO partially visible around the bust, identifying the emperor as Dominus Noster Leo. The coin exhibits heavy green patination consistent with prolonged burial, and the flan is irregular in shape as is typical of this minor denomination. Strike details are moderately worn, though the general portrait type remains identifiable.

Additional information

Aelia Verina was wife to Leo I and one of the most politically active empresses of the fifth century — she later conspired in the assassination of Leo's powerful general Aspar in 471, and after Leo's death attempted to place her own brother Basiliscus on the throne. Coins struck in her name are rare partly because empress coinages of this period were issued selectively and in limited volume, not as a matter of routine imperial policy.
