Magnesia ad Maeandrum occupied an awkward position in the fourth century — caught between Lydian, Persian, and eventually Macedonian authority, the city rarely controlled its own political fate for long. Its bronze coinage from this period, struck under shifting hegemonies, functioned essentially as small-change civic currency while larger denominations and silver issues moved through the hands of whichever power held the region. The magistrate name Kydias appears on this issue as the responsible issuing official, a practice common to Ionian mints of the period as a form of administrative accountability rather than personal commemoration.
