These crude struck bronzes, sometimes called "barbarous" imitations, were produced by Germanic groups copying late Roman coinage circulating along the Rhine and Danube frontiers during the period of heaviest pressure on those borders. The prototypes were the Fel Temp Reparatio issues of Constantius II, struck from 348 onward — ubiquitous enough in frontier zones to become the template for local imitation. The "square boat" designation refers to a specific stylistic degeneration in how the reverse type was rendered by die-cutters working outside the imperial system, with no access to trained engravers.
