These imitative bronzes — struck by Germanic groups operating beyond the Rhine and Danube frontiers — were produced in response to genuine shortages of Roman small change in barbarian-adjacent economies. They were not forgeries in any meaningful sense; the communities making them had no access to imperial mints and needed functional exchange media. The boat reverse type, derived from official Fel Temp Reparatio issues of the 348 AD reform, was apparently legible enough to local users that fidelity to the prototype mattered less than weight and size.

B/Imit#27 specifically is distinguished by the absence of a star in the boat field — a minor but diagnostically useful detail for separating die groups within this sprawling imitative tradition.
